Sten Thore is the Gregory A. Kozmetsky Centennial Fellow Emeritus in the IC2 Institute, the University of Texas at Austin. From 1997-1999, he held a chair in the Commercialization of Science and Technology at the Instituto Superior Tecnico (IST), Lisbon, donated by the Luso-American Development Foundation. This appointment was an outgrowth of the ongoing collaboration between the IC2 Institute and the IST, adding Lisbon as a node in the IC2 international network of electronic classrooms, teaching the IC2 Executive M.Sc. program in the Commercialization of Science and Technology.
Dr. Thore has been working on venture capitalism, and supporting mathematical and computer techniques. His most recent book is the edited volume Technology Commercialization: DEA and Related Analytical Methods for Evaluating the Use and Implementation of Technical Innovation, Kluwer Academic Publishers, Boston/Dordrecht/London, 2002. Among other publications, mention should be made of the volume The Diversity, Complexity, and Evolution of High Tech Capitalism, Kluwer Academic Publishers, Boston 1995, which holds the distinction of being one of the first ever full-length manuscripts published on the Internet. See http://www.ic2.org/pubs/sten.pdf Earlier he published a monograph entitled Economic Logistics: The Optimization of Spatial and Sectorial Resource, Production, and Distribution Systems (Quorum Books, Westport, Conn., 1991). The textbook Computational Economics: Economic Modeling with Optimization Software (The Scientific Press, South San Francisco, Calif. 1991, coauthored with IC2 fellow G.L. Thompson of Carnegie Mellon University) pioneered the integration of an economics text with computer software. Career Milestones 1970-1978 Chair in economics at the Norwegian School of Economics and Business Administration, Bergen, by authorization of the King-in-council. 1978-1981 Appointed Senior research fellow at the "Institute for Constructive Capitalism", Graduate School of Business, The University of Texas at Austin.1981-1982. The Institute had been started only one year earlier, by George Kozmetsky, then dean of the Graduate Business School. During the next 20 years, the IC2 Institute was to grow to become a major research facility and sponsor of venture capitalism, operating a large high technology incubator and bringing together a vast network of research specialists. 1983 Develops undergraduate course in the Capitalist System, and teaches it for the next seven years at the Department of Economics, the University of Texas at Austin. 1983 The IC2 Institute moves to new premises in Austin. On the occasion of the centennial celebrations of the University of Texas at Austin, Dr. Thore is appointed Gregory A. Kozmetsky Centennial Fellow, one of 16 endowed centennial fellowships created at the IC2 Institute the same year. 1994 Develops a Ph.D. course in the Commercialization of Space Technology, and teaches it for two years in the Department of Aerospace Engineering, The University of Texas at Austin. 1995 Faculty member, the new Master of Science Degree program in the Commercialization of Science and Technology, The University of Texas at Austin. For the first few years, the new degree was taught both in Austin, Texas and in Washington, D.C. 1997 Retires from the University of Texas, after 20 years of service. Assumes a chair in the Commercialization of Science and Technology at the Instituto Superior Técnico (IST), Lisbon, donated by the Luso-American Development Foundation. Lisbon is added as yet another node in the rapidly expanding international network of electronic classrooms, teaching the IC2 Executive M.Sc. program in the Commercialization of Science and Technology.
